China’s BYD will Start Selling EVs in the UK this Quarter

Chinese EV automaker BYD will start selling EVs in the UK and will debut with the Atto 3 SUV starting this quarter in the UK market. Warren Buffett’s backed automaker giant aims to be a global leader in EV sales and has its eyes set on the UK market where electric cars are rapidly gaining a share of the market. EVs accounted for around 17 percent of deliveries last year in the UK, surpassing deliveries of diesel vehicles for the first time ever.

BYD has announced four dealer partners in the UK, Pendragon Plc, Arnold Clark Automobiles Ltd., Lookers Motor Group Ltd., and LSH Auto Holdings. The company says it will appoint more dealer partners in the coming weeks.

BYD is targeting the market’s most popular segment with the launch of the Atto 3 SUV and the main selling point of BYD EVs might be its battery technology. The pricing is also expected to be on the competitive side so as to steal the market share from mainstream brands such as Volkswagen and Hyundai.

BYD has been constantly expanding in Europe and already has a presence in countries including Norway, Denmark, Sweden, the Netherlands, and Belgium. The UK is one of the biggest car markets in Europe but still automakers have struggled to revive sales since the covid-19 pandemic and registrations have slumped to a 30-year low in 2022.

BYD group has posted thumping sales numbers in other markets around Asia, including Thailand and Australia, and according to BloombergNEF, BYD can overtake Tesla in global EV sales this year. Can the BYD group repeat its success story in the UK  as well?

Atto 3 is built on BYD’s e-platform 3.0 architecture that supports charging rates of up to 80kW. 60.5 kWh battery pack offers a WLTP-certified range of 261 miles and the single motor setup is capable of producing 201 bhp. Atto 3 is similar to the MG ZS EV in dimensions, it is 4.5m long, 1.9m wide and 1.6m tall.
