Tesla Punished to Pay $3.2 Million in the Race Discrimination Case Filed by Black Ex-Worker

  • A jury in San Francisco, California has ordered Tesla to pay $3.2 million in the longstanding racial discrimination lawsuit filed by a former black worker, Owen Diaz, that he won.
  • In the latest ruling, the former construction elevator operator has been awarded $175,000 in damages for the emotional distress and $3 million in punitive damages meant to deter Tesla from allowing the conduct to happen again.
  • He was previously awarded a verdict of $137 million in 2021, including punitive damages, after a jury determined Diaz had suffered civil rights violations, and that the EV maker failed to take all reasonable steps to end and prevent the racist harassment.
  • The amount was later slashed to $15 million by a judge who argued that the previous jury had awarded an “unconstitutionally large” sum. But in 2022, Owens rejected the $15 million award, instead opting for this new trial.
  • During Friday’s closing arguments, lawyers for Owens urged jurors to award him nearly $160 million in damages, Reuters reported, while Tesla has aimed to limit the award to $600,000.
  • On Monday, Elon Musk reacted to the verdict. He said on Twitter that if Tesla had been “allowed to introduce new evidence, the verdict would’ve been zero. The jury did the best they could with the information they had. I respect the decision.”

The numbers are significantly better if we compare year-on-year basis as the production has grown by 268 percent to a year ago but the numbers are slightly lower by 625 units from Q4 2022.

If we talk about vehicle deliveries, Rivian has reported 7,946 units which is up by 548 percent on a year-over-year basis. The same is the case, if we compare with Q4 2022, the deliveries are lower by 108 vehicles.

Rivian did not break the numbers for particular models, so those are the total values for three BEVs: R1T pickup, R1S SUV, and EDV vans for Amazon.

Rivian said, “These figures remain in line with the company’s expectations, and it believes it is on track to deliver on the 50,000 annual production guidance previously provided.”
