Lucid motors have launched a new ultra-high performance sub-brand Sapphire and it is set to debut with the most powerful electric sedan: Lucid Air Sapphire. The world’s first fully electric luxury super-sports sedan will boast over 1,200 horsepower and will come with the company’s very first three-motor powertrain. The level of performance claimed is unbelievable; the super sedan can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in less than 2 seconds and from 0 to 100 mph in less than 4 seconds.
Not just that it can achieve a top speed of over 200 mph and finish the quarter mile in less than 9 seconds. Well, it also accompanies a hefty price tag of around $250,000 and will come into production in the mid of 2023.
The Air Sapphire’s new twin rear-drive unit packs a megawatt of power with a pair of 500 kW motors and both motors have separate power units. While the front axle shares the same single-drive unit as the Air Dream and Grand Touring Performance models. The twin rear-drive unit also provides the advantage of torque vectoring which enhances the turn-in or straight-line stability. The twin motor setup at the rear also receives new heat exchanger technology and a heightened coolant flow rate.
Air Sapphire’s driving dynamics have been re-engineered and the sapphire model gets ceramic breaks, stiffer front and rear suspension, new damper settings, stiffer bushings, and a unique tuning for ABS, traction, stability control, and electronic power steering. For high-performance driving the body has been widened by 21 millimeters at the front and 24 millimeters at the rear and high-performance Aero Sapphire wheels have been provided.
These unique wheels also come with removable carbon fiber aero disk wheel covers that help improve the aerodynamic efficiency of the car. Atop of that specially developed, wider, and more aggressive, Michelin PS4S tires, sized 265/35R20 in the front and 295/30R21 in the rear are provided.
The new Sapphire Mojave interior theme exclusive to the sapphire variant includes sport seats having big side bolsters that are upholstered in Lucid Black leather trimmed with black Alcantara and contrast stitching in Sapphire Blue. A new Sapphire Mode has been added to the super sedan that extracts the full potential of the new three-motor configuration.
Lucid Air Sapphire will be offered as a limited-production model and the bookings will open on August 23. Customers will have to pay $24,900 for the reservation and deliveries are planned for next year in the US and Canada.
