Recall Alert: Tesla Motors to Recall Over 1 Million Cars

Tesla Motors will recall over 1 million vehicles produced between 2017 and 2022 as engineers have found a problem with the automatic reversal system of the power windows. During the production testing in August, it was found that the automatic power windows do not retract or stop every time an obstruction is present. Due to this, the car’s window might pinch or apply excessive force to a body part of an occupant if it goes undetected. As per the compliances of the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS) for Power-Operated Windows Systems,  this problem will be treated as a safety issue as it poses a risk of injury to an occupant.

The following models and model years will be affected in this recall by Tesla:

MakeModelYear
TeslaMODEL 32017-2022
TeslaMODEL S2021-2022
TeslaMODEL X2021-2022
TeslaMODEL Y2020-2021

According to National HighwayTraffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), it was found that the automatic power window reversal system has greater than expected variations in response to pinch detection in above mentioned Tesla vehicles. Hence, they do not comply with the safety guidelines of FMVSS for power-operated windows systems and NHTSA is issuing a recall report for 1,096,762 vehicles. It also clarified that no injuries have been reported till now from this issue.

NHTSA recall report said:

Tesla, Inc. (Tesla) is recalling certain 2017-2022 Model 3, 2020-2021 Model Y, and 2021-2022 Model S and Model X vehicles. The window automatic reversal system may not react correctly after detecting an obstruction. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 118, ‘Power-Operated Window Systems.’

The good part is, Tesla does not need to physically recall any vehicle to a dealership or service center, as is the case with traditional recalls. All thanks to the high level of connectivity in Tesla’s vehicles, Tesla can fix this issue by simply sending an over-the-air(OTA) software update to the affected models. It is actually a big competitive edge that Tesla has over its competition, which makes things so hassle-free. Tesla has started to push the OTA update to the vehicles already on the road and the newly produced vehicles have the updated software.
